Electric vehicle charging equipment

Drive Australia's clean energy future — and your bottom line

Like a mobile phone, your electric vehicle (EV) needs its battery charged. You can charge your EV battery in different ways.

What will work best for you depends on your charging options and intentions for your vehicle. For example, are you driving a short distance down to the shops or to work, or are you travelling on a long road trip?

Understanding more about EV charging will help you make informed choices when purchasing and operating your EV. You can also find more information about the charging requirements of a particular EV from the vehicle’s manufacturer.

Types of Power: AC vs DC Charging

AC power is what’s supplied through the grid and used in everyday household appliances like your TV, fridge, and kettle. It’s also the most common type of power used for standard EV charging at home.

DC power, on the other hand, is used to store energy in batteries and power larger systems. Your electric vehicle battery ultimately stores energy in DC form.

When charging your EV, the vehicle uses a built-in converter—known as an on-board charger (OBC)—to convert AC power from your home into DC power for the battery.

You can charge your EV using both AC and DC:

  • AC Charging – Ideal for home and overnight charging
  • DC Fast Charging – Delivers power directly to the battery, bypassing the OBC for much faster charging times

At EcoBridge, we help you choose the right charging solution based on your needs—whether it’s convenient home charging or fast, on-the-go power.

EV Charging levels

Level 1 (AC) – Basic Home Charging

Simple & Accessible Charging

Plug your EV into a standard 240V power point for easy, everyday charging at home.

  • No special setup required
  • Slow “trickle” charging (up to 2.4 kW)
  • Can take up to 24 hours for full charge
  • Ideal for short daily driving needs

Perfect for low usage—just like charging your phone overnight.

Level 2 (AC) – Faster Smart Charging

Efficient & Convenient Solution

Level 2 chargers deliver higher power, making charging much faster and more practical.

  • 7 kW to 22 kW charging speed
  • Ideal for home installations
  • Available at shopping centres & public spaces
  • Can be paired with smart charging systems

Great for daily use with quicker turnaround times.

Level 3 (DC) – Ultra-Fast Charging

Rapid Charging On-the-Go

DC fast chargers deliver power directly to your EV battery for the quickest charge possible.

  • 25 kW to 350 kW (ultra-fast options available)
  • Charges in minutes instead of hours
  • Found on highways & major locations
  • Higher cost but maximum convenience

Best for long trips and quick top-ups when you’re on the move.

how we work

DRIVE with care

Steps

Before leaving for your EV road trip, consider these tips and tricks to make the most of your trip and remember to DRIVE with care.

D

Design your journey with your EV charging needs in mind. Download apps for the major charging providers in case your first choice of provider is not the most convenient. Bring along your charging provider’s radio frequency identification (RFID) card for tap-and-go payment systems at compatible chargers, and if travelling in areas of limited mobile coverage.

R

Remember to charge to 100% before you leave home and (if possible) before you head back home. For all other locations during your journey, charge to 80% as rule of thumb. This is more time efficient as charging speeds may drop considerably after 80% charge.

I

Inform yourself about your car. Know what affects your state of charge, and what that means for your charging stops.

V

Vacate the charging station when finished to ensure the next car can charge as soon as possible. Where possible, let other users know when you expect to finish your charging session to allow other EV drivers to plan.

E

Enjoy the journey and charge during your regular 2 hourly rest-revive-survive breaks. Many charging stations across the country are in fantastic spots with facilities, playgrounds, and food outlets nearby. Also consider overnight options for charging. There are more destination chargers being installed across Australia than ever before. This includes chargers that may be provided at your holiday accommodation.
